They are trained in using various communication skills and often work in call centers or other settings where they talk to customers by telephone - remote work has also been growing in this space.

How to Become a Customer Service Representative

Becoming a customer service representative is a reasonably straightforward ordeal. The primary quality/skill you should possess is the ability to interact at a high level with people - aka Great Communication.

Outside of that, you will learn what is needed as you gain experience working on the job. Here are a few additional skills you might need to possess to hold a customer service rep position:

  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

  • Active listening skills

  • Problem-solving skills

  • Conflict resolution skills

  • Basic computer and software skills

  • Knowledge of the company's products or services

What education do you need for customer service?

The education requirements for customer service jobs can vary depending on the specific position and the employer. In some cases, customer service jobs may only require a high school diploma or equivalent, while other jobs may require a bachelor's degree or higher.

In general, customer service jobs may require a combination of education, experience, and specific skills.
