What Technique Do You Use to Win or Influence the Interviewer?
Here are the 4 techniques that always stick out and win me over during an interview (along with other interviewers I know).
Note: I’ve recruited for multiple Fortune 500 companies, built close hiring manager relationships, and hired for other held positions.
1. Respect
The interviewer is taking time out of their busy day to meet with you. Thanking them for their time and being respectful throughout the interview goes a long way.
2. Confidence (not cockiness)
Be confident in yourself and your trade. Most hiring managers look for strong and confident candidates when filling a role.
Don’t push it too far, though – coming off cocky or arrogant can shut down your chances of receiving an offer.
3. Great questions
Asking questions throughout the interview shows your general interest in a role and makes for a better-flowing conversation.
One question I can’t recommend enough is to ask the interviewer for “recommendations on how you can better yourself and make corrections if there were another interview.”
Again, this shows your interest in the role and the desire/ability to improve continuously.
4. Thank you letter
Although it might seem simple and unimportant, sending a follow-up “thank you” letter (or email) can go a long way. It separates you from other great applicants applying for the role.
Thank them for their time and the opportunity to chat (try to be more personable and add something discussed during the interview)
If you pair confidence and respect with great questions and a follow-up “thank you” letter, things will often turn out well.
I hope that helps, and best of luck in your interview!
